He is attempting to achieve the impossible. The students are spoiled narcissists, suckups, politicking weasels, imitators, or mindless followers of fashion -- all of them looking for validation outside themselves. It makes zero sense. Carrie, our casual movie-goer, reminds us all that cinema is in fact supposed to be fun and entertaining and that sometimes, just sometimes, happy endings are good. Both films faintly echo a four-page catalog of Clowes’s gripes called “Art School Confidential” that appeared in his comic book Eightball. Meme s'il n'est pas tout à fait realiste , il est meme plutot pessimiste par rapport à la realité sur le monde de l'art contemporain. Holding it together is the same anger about the way art is taught that gave so much edgy life to the scenes with Illeana Douglas in Ghost World. As a teen, Jerome is not much luckier, but is both ambitious to getting into the fancy pants Strathmore Institute, a New York art school, and to getting the girl (Audrey, seen in the school's literature). Art School Confidential‘s also full of Freudian confusion, which becomes obvious when we belatedly discover that the heroine dislikes the work of a particular painter simply because he’s her father. Son enquête va prendre une tournure inattendue, lorsque ses oeuvres vont être acclamées par la critique. Chip Kidd's novel "The Cheese Monkeys: A … It just worked for me. The cast is great, it’s legitimately funny, and even the characters with minimal development feel like they have a place in the story. Le suspense est intense et une grosse perte de temps à l'arrivée. Les meilleurs films de l'année 2005, Despite this minor complaint, Terry Zwigoff's style is unique and brilliant, and a lot of the jokes still deliver! This had a handful of qualities I thought were pretty notable, including the surprising presence of some genuine dinginess in the visuals - stained carpets and sweaters, oil and litter on the ground, slimy White Castle burgers. Best are the varied works of the art school students showing their different views of what is art. It's missing something overall for me, though - it's not quite right to say that…, this movie is so annoying that i had to take 90 days off of letterboxd reviews and my important work of watching every malkovich film. The film is a satire of the contemporary art world, seen through the eyes of Jerome (Max Minghella, son of director Anthony), a freshman at the prestigious Strathmore Academy in New York. It was such a disappointment to see a Zwigoff film turn into…. Feels like an upbeat coming of age comedy directed by a half asleep geriatric old man. 23 abonnés The advert is not that inspiring for it, and upon watching the movie, its actually a pretty standard and largely uninspired movie about people who look for inspiration in things, but with nice direction and a great cast. The creepy theater chicks, the pretentious douchebags, the pissed off film students, the tenured teacher, they are all here in brilliant representation. Holding it together is the same anger about the way art is taught that gave so much edgy life to the scenes with Illeana Douglas in Ghost World. In 2006 Art School Confidential was released on a limited basis. It makes zero sense. My verdict: Worth a watch but don’t expect to be overly thrilled by anything. In any case, the main “type” that’s missing from both lists is Bardo/Clowes — the adolescent wiseass who insists on reducing his classmates to such categories. Art school confidential has ideas.Lot's of intriguing offbeat ideas. And while it tries to be funny and offbeat but it fails in the end.Tries to make a successful satire out of art,but it fails to churn up even one great laugh. And it's boring at times,it just dangles around emphasizing what art really is, without actually telling us what it really is.It just mingles and experiments with the concept of art and tries to … I imagine the book would be a lot better. Like nobody, least of all the artists with an eye for detail, which included Jerome, had any idea that there was something up with the paintings? Art School Confidential is the second. The basic activities of drawing and painting are sometimes seen as a form of bluffing and an escape from “real” life, and a key macho, post-Freudian premise seems to be that getting even with bullies and getting laid are the two main motives for becoming an artist — a thesis that’s illustrated as soon as the movie starts, when Clowes’s stand-in Jerome (Max Minghella) gets bullied on a playground. By this point we’ve also met Jerome’s two roommates — a blowhard film student who’s making a movie about the serial killings and a fashion major who’s in comic denial about his own gayness. Drawn to Strathmore by a photo of a nude artists’ model on a brochure and still a virgin when he arrives, Jerome is obviously provoked by Bardo’s remark during his first drawing class that “this school is like a pussy buffet” and by his later comment that Audrey (Sophia Myles), Jerome’s dream model, is “prime real estate.” The movie makes us wince at the gross insensitivity of such remarks, and it makes us wonder about Bardo’s admiration for Jimmy (Jim Broadbent), a cynical, embittered, and alcoholic alumnus we gradually realize is a serial killer who’s been terrorizing the campus. Art students turn their noses up at Jerome's pretty solid work while hilariously over-analyzing a terribly basic drawing of a Ferrari. Maybe there is some artistic explanation for it that I’m missing. Une histoire franchement pas si mal, mélanger d'un roman policier et de la comédie limite ridicule, menant des scénarios et des rôles parfois bon et parfois sans plus... Ca aurait été beaucoup meilleur sans la comédie. From the director of "Ghost World"(and once again adapted from a comic by Daniel Clowes)comes this bafflingly unknown black comedy centered around the enigma of the art academy. Then we learn that the classmate is an underground cop hoping to nab the serial killer, and since one of Jimmy’s collages contains a key piece of evidence, Jerome becomes the prime suspect. Some of it, praised by Professor Sandiford, really brings out the differences between thinking one is an artist and actually being one. It’s sole purpose seems to be a biting critique of the art world, (and honestly just people in general) and it certainly succeeds on that level. It’s characteristic of Clowes’s overall disaffection that the comic “Art School Confidential” lists “certain recurring character types [that] appear in every art-school class” and that in the movie Bardo (Joel David Moore), a classmate of Jerome’s, does the same thing. What the closeted character is supposed to signify in Clowes’s critique of art schools is beyond me. Also, if you don’t really know a lot about art, you might be lost for some of the jokes and conversations, but you can hardly blame a film centred around art school for that. Art School Confidential bears a great deal of similarity to Ghost World, which makes perfect sense considering both are directed by Terry Zwigoff and adapted from the respectively named comics of Daniel Clowes, but where the latter excels in the derision of its own characters the former simply doesn’t manage to achieve that same type of detachment.
