I hadn’t seen the film for years, despite my childhood obsession with it, but as soon as I heard the main theme it all came flooding back.
Zemeckis gets a lot fancier with the transition from Baltron to Streep here. While social conditions change, fashion is trying to keep up with them. Racial, gender and sexual diversity have become more and more obvious in fashion shows and magazines. There are other deleted scenes along the way, too, including a bit about Ernest temporarily storing Madeline in the freezer. It’s all apparently done in a single shot. Madeline, having taken the potion, is now immortal, but after getting pushed down the stairs, her body is still subject to the rapid decay that follows death.
When Madeline and Ernest arrive at Helen’s party for her novel, they find her looking twenty years younger, fit, and very beautiful.
When the envious Madeline sees Helen thin in a perfect shape, she decides to seek out Lisle and buys a potion to become young again. Helen seduces Ernest, plotting with him to murder Madeline, but he ignores her carefully laid plans and takes action for maybe the first time in his life: he pushes his wife down the stairs to her death. For a silly comedy, there’s a proper philosophical point underscoring the plot – though it shies away from getting too sentimental. As described in a Los Angeles Times article from 1996, Roberts performed a stunt known as a “ratchet gag” in a scene when Madeline shoots Hawn’s character, Helen Sharp, with a double-barreled shotgun. The owner gives a business card of the specialist in rejuvenation Lisle Von Rhuman to her.
