I think it was a bit of a risk to bill it as a second book in the series (rather than as a prequel) as I have certain expectations for a second installment that don't apply to a prequel. There is magic as well and wonderful world building.

For instance, rather than spending a couple hundred words describing working on flying changes, the author could have used those same words to integrate the work on flying changes into Jenni earning the respect of a character that becomes an integral part to her development or the plot.
