Director: 86 min After seeing this and The Double, I REALLY hope Richard Ayoade continues to make films, he has a lovely talent. Kursk offers excellent production values, cinematography and performances, but falls victim to its own conceit in attempting to interweave muddled, inconsistent political statements, resulting in a film that alternates between tense action and maudlin sentimentality. As a submarine veteran of 3 boats, I can assure you the favorite submarine comedy of all time is “Crimson Tide”. Not surprisingly, the 50+ year old The Enemy Below has an antiquated feel, especially the pacing and special effects, but the superlative plot carries it through. During the Cold War, a scientific team refits a Japanese submarine and hires an ex-Navy officer to find a secret Chinese atomic island base and prevent a Communist plot against America that could trigger WW3.

Director: David Twohy At first it seemed that some of the decisions central to the plot, made by the young anti-hero, were too stupid for the "reality" of the character. As an adaptation, it keeps the emotion, narrative style, and dry comedy perfectly.
