Superficial things are given such importance and noticed and discussed that it can be stifling for some women. Bringing back old characters is always fun for long time readers. In this novel, "the" is repeatedly substituted for "die"; the maid Gracie is referred to as Grade; and I googled "talcing naps" only to realize that "taking naps" was intended.
