Good for the young adult crowd. My guess is that this would make a good limited series, along the lines of Mr. Selfridge or Downton Abbey.

They frequently don't have enough to eat and therefore try far too hard to keep up an artistic appearance. This Academy Award nominated film stars Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, who finds herself falling for the man she swore to loathe forever. Bereft of makeup and hair shorn to an unflattering bob, constantly scribbling in her diary, she is the embodiment of the intellectual teen; her capacity for articulating cascading emotions seeing her forming a passionate bond with the written word. But her ongoing contemplation of her madcap family is born of concern rather than self-obsession. An affair between the second in line to Britain's throne and the princess of the feuding Irish spells doom for the young lovers. I haven't read Dodie Smith's novel so don't know whether the slightly muted tone is due to allegience to the original story. Though their love is true, the societal pressures and sexual mores of the time cause strain between the young couple, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night. I suppose that this was a low-budget project.

This is a charming little coming of age story. Rentals are not eligible. Bill Nighy is miscast as the reclusive writer father, and Henry Cavill as Casandara's would-be beau Stephen is leaden. Looking for something to watch? I did read the book but years ago and couldn't remember. A man and his brother on a mission of revenge become trapped in a harrowing occult experiment dating back to the Third Reich. Overall though, "I capture the castle" is sweetly and undemandingly entertaining, and Romola Garai's vulnerability is intoxicating.

I first read this book when I was 16 and going to the convent. It had a little of everything, a dis functional family living in a run down castle, an alcoholic father who was a has been writer, a stepmother who liked to sunbathe in the nude, a sister who was ambitious to leave the nest, no matter how, and the 17 year old dewy eyed sweet main character who was in love with her sisters fiancé even though the local boy loved her. The tales play out in New York, Paris and Rome through three couples who appear to have nothing related, but share deep commonalities: lovers and estranged spouses, children lost and found.
