–. That isn't to say the essence of the band has been removed; this is still very much an incredibly gorgeous album full of gorgeous vocal hooks, but I would consider this to no longer be the focal point of their music. The band has released five albums, with six released singles. The album takes places in 2030, where Artilects, artificial intellects, control a major company centered around such machines, which have mental capacities far greater than those of ordinary humans. Listen to The Singularity (Phase I - Neohumanity) by Scar Symmetry on Apple Music. Scar Symmetry - The Singularity - Phase I: Neohumanity review: Quite a satisfying beginning of a new journey Every album they've released has had them snailing towards a slightly new sound while still very much retaining the essence of their sound - and what you'll find is that sound they've been crawling towards is a heavily progressive influenced variation of the most catchy music you've ever heard. The instrumental production is massive, and every note is completely clear. Two band members who really shine are vocalists Lars Palmqvist and Robeth Karlsson. It’s now 2014 and SCAR SYMMETRY is set to release their new creation called “The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity)”. Like others I was quite concerned about the departure of Christian Alvestam (after all the guy is a phenomenal vocalist), but I think it’s sufficient to say that on this album, the two vocalists who replaced him truly find their own on this album, sometimes even surpassing his skill. ), they incorporate synthesised sounds into their music. Scar Symmetry is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Avesta in Dalarna County, formed in 2004. The guy should seriously release a solo album soon. However, for the more open-minded listener, I think this one is definitely worth a spin or a click or whatever it is kids do these days. SCAR SYMMETRY's 'Limits To Infinity' is taken from "THE SINGULARITY (PHASE I - NEOHUMANITY). Country: Listen to “Neuromancers” and “Neohuman” and tell me whether you still miss Christian’s presence in the band. The lead break at 2:55 is also marvellous and epic demonstrating the subtle progressive reach of this band. It morphs into an expected cinematic resolution by the end though, and need I remind you that the leads and solos are just ridiculously good? Written based on this version: 2014, CD, Nuclear Blast. Scar Symmetry – The Singularity (Phase 1 - Neohumanity) Scar Symmetry. The first part of a concept album trilogy, the mind-blowing cover artwork was created by … Unlimited in Infinity - 95%. No, there is nothing as quick and cheerful as "Morphogenesis" or "The Illusionist" here, but I find some of these more evolving tracks equally arresting, as the band never necessarily disposes of their earlier appeals entirely. We have the guitar for that now, don’t we? 15 Scar Symmetry Album Photos. Wonder how long it will take for people to accept that one. The crushing breakdown at 3:10 is a wonderful use of dynamics. The guitar leads are made up of insanely sweeped, exotic-sounding runs of out-of-key notes that sound like a computer or a synthesizer yet obviously aren't. 12 likes. The mentioned deficiencies aren't that looming of obstacles, and one can feasibly remove the two weaker middle tracks and enjoy fluid consistency from cover to cover, but the brash truth is that The Singularity falls somewhat short of the greatness the band (and I'm sure the Holographic Universe castoffs that have come crawling back by now) want you to believe. The Singularity (Phase 1 – Neohumanity) SCAR SYMMETRY Released on: 2014-10-14 Founded back in 2004 when Jonas Kjellgren (CARNAL FORGE, CENTINEX, WORLD … Simply godlike. When I first learned of Jonas Kjellgren's departure, I was bummed. Lastly, the lyrical concept of this album (as well as the Singularity trilogy as a whole) is, as you'd expect from drummer/lyricist Henrik Ohlsson, eloquently worded and very thought-provoking. “Cryonic Harvest” has one of the best intros I’ve heard in quite a while masterfully with the main floating lead part building up the song to its explosive verse. This is melodic rock/groove metal not too far removed from what Solution .45 shat the bed with, but done with a finesse and picturesque scope that blows Älvestam's current outfit out of the æther. This can in many ways be viewed as the black to the white of The Unseen Empire, featuring a number of well-structured, sweeping Venusian monuments to excess like "Neohuman" and the polarizing closer "Technocalyptic Cybergeddon," both breaching the eight-minute mark and frankly making stellar use of most of their given time. I'm sorry I couldn't go into superb detail like I normally do on reviews, but I didn't feel like discussing every little minutia of the album's music. I'll even go so far as to say that they actually give Christian Alvestam a run for his money; Christian's vocal performance on Holographic Universe was godlike, but this album may very well be Lars & Roberth's Holographic Universe. The Singularity, Phase 1: Neohumanity is a brilliant album that flourishes with the many talents and ideas of Nilsson, which brings the listener closer to the non-realistic focus of the reality that truly could be artificial intellect Scar Symmetry guitarist Per Nilsson is best described as a multi-instrumentalist – one could even go so far as to assign him the title of “creative driving force” when looking at the musical construction of The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity). The Singularity (Phase I – Neohumanity). 1 History 1.1 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Red. Try as I must, I just can’t get it out of my head. It's a great, unique listening experience that I have yet to find an equal to. They say first impressions are lasting impressions, but such is not true with Scar Symmetry's latest release The Singularity (Phase I: Neohumanity). Every single song stands out as well as paints the larger picture of the concept of this album; being about the rise of artificial intellects with capabilities far beyond the reach of human beings and their mortal minds, so much so that by the year 2030, Artificial Brains will be one of the world’s biggest industries. Now where's my damn artificial brain at? Fortunately, Phase I is a fairly consumable Scar Symmetry product, particularly when compared to the density of their last record The Unseen Empire. Listen free to Scar Symmetry – The Singularity (Phase I - Neohumanity) (The Shape of Things to Come, Neohuman and more). I'm just going to close this review with saying that The Singularity - Phase I: Neohumanity is a brilliant album that not only is the pinnacle of the band's discography, but also the best possible way to kick off a concept album trilogy that you can bet your 401K I'll be paying very close attention to. Hell, Henrik's primary language isn't even English, and he's not only a much better wordsmith than I could ever dream to be, I've also learned about MANY incredible things because of his lyrics. The highlights of the album are "Limits to Infinity," which has an annoyingly catchy chorus; and "Cryonic Harvest," which combines percussive blast beats with brutal vocals to make an almost-classic sounding death metal masterpiece. So, in summary, this album is pretty much Scar Symmetry in their posthuman state, having surpassed the limits of their previous self while retaining the essence of who they are. To directly quote the closing statement for my earlier review of The Unseen Empire: "It makes a strong-enough case for the band's continued existence, which is about all us or they can hope for at this point." This album is completely unique, unlike anything you've ever heard. As expected, The Singularity (Phase I: Neohumanity) continues making relative strides in the post-Älvestam environment that finds the band actually breaking more innovative ground compared to the flaccid earlier output. It is something of an expected shame that the band fails to maintain such high standards throughout, as the weaker tracks are more or less dead on arrival. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, probably nothing will. Even the keys have been put to wonderful use both retaining and expanding their spacey edge and most importantly, never forgetting that their primary purpose is to provide atmosphere to the music and not as a reckless solo instrument (I’m looking at you Dream Theater). I didn't have a problem with The Unseen Empire only having nine songs because those songs averaged about five minutes a pop, but even with this album having a 10 minute song, it still seemed like short sex to my ears. Hell, just listen to “Children Of The Integrated Circuit” to get a clearer picture of his overflowing solo style and an epic combination of all his influences. Holy FUCK was I wrong. Scar Symmetry - The Singularity (Phase I: Neohumanity) - Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives. If there was a single thing to nitpick about, I feel as if "Children of the Integrated Circuit" should've been the ending of "The Spiral Timeshift" instead of its own song. Still, this very well may be my favorite output from these guys up to this point, as they finally batten down the hatches and deliver the melodic excess that we always hoped they would. Still, however one wants to look at it, the vocals are consistently amazing and Lars' performance is as excellent as every other member's performance on the album. Make no mistake, though, Scar Symmetry have always had a unique take on the genre, seamlessly blending aggressive death metal and some of the poppiest "Top 40" hooks one's ever heard with an equal reliance on abrasive riffs, deep, guttural growls, and soaring, beautiful cleans expected more out of power metal than melodic death metal. The mere fact that The Singularity is supposedly only the first part of a trilogy is telling enough in and of itself, but even when one dials back and views the microcosmos of this album on its own, a clear sense of both ostentation and borderline superfluity become evident. Country: The album shows the drawing line between transhumanists who embrace the new technology, implanting some of it into their own bodies, and those who oppose the Artilects. “Limits To Infinity” has a super catchy chorus and you’ll hear yourself singing along in no time - “There are limits to infinity”. Don’t get me wrong - Dark Matter Dimension and The Unseen Empire had good songs, but I found myself not being enthralled by the album as a whole, only digging a few tracks, while the rest of them just lingered around lacking a bit in the memorability factor. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. SCAR SYMMETRY recording the album "THE SINGULARITY (PHASE I - NEOHUMANITY). There are two vocalists on this album; one who does a brutal, Mikael Åkerfeldt-like growl; and one who does pop-punkish cleans. One of 2014’s best albums? Overall, this album is probably not for the metal elitist, due to the use of pop-punk vocals. I'm well beyond that and it still surprises me. Scar Symmetry is a melodic death metal band from Avesta, Sweden formed in 2004. This is clearly evident in the two sprawling epics of “Neohuman” and “Technocalyptic Cybergeddon”. They are currently signed to Nuclear Blast records. The synthetic deck has been shuffled yet again, this time ejecting the more compact, bread-and-butter songwriting evident on the last two records and rotating in an audacious burst of pretense. Format: CD, Album, Limited Edition, Digipak. "Neohuman" and "The Spiral Timeshift" are pretty good as well, but I always find myself going back to those two songs. I'm just going to throw this out there and get it out of the way: Scar Symmetry is the best metal band in the entire damn world. The band kicks off Phase I with a super catchy melodic intro that bleeds into a rather epic eight-minute track “Neohuman” that does come with plenty of poppy vocal lines provided by one of their two vocalists. They are working on a concept album trilogy, "The Singularity". Scar Symmetry remains Scar Symmetry and remains as excellent as they've ever been, slowly reinventing their condition as to avoid being trapped in the evolutionary circle of bands rehashing the same album over and over and losing quality because of it (hi, Eluveitie), but trudging along the path to posthumanism cautiously as to allow their fanbase to cast aside their mental limitations with them, instead of leaving their fanbase in the previous pitstop of mental development, bewildered and agitated, rendered incapable of comprehending the ramblings of the band they once adored (hi, Opeth). Tracks like "Cryonic Harvest" and "Neuromancers" are stuffed with complex rhythms, while the grand epics of the album - "Neohuman" and "Technocalyptic Cybergeddon" are full of so many time changes and structure changes they've become what is easily the most unpredictable songs in the band's catalog - seriously, you can't say you saw the change around 6:19 into "Technocalyptic Cybergeddon" coming the first listen. Plus the band in its current form has become one hell of a tour de force of progressive and amazing songwriting and this album shows that in spades. Stream songs including "The Shape of Things to Come", "Neohuman" and more. Now I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me on this one, but then again it all boils down to personal tastes and to each his/her own. Just listen to his otherworldly and cosmic solos on Neohuman around 6:34 (man, what a solo), “The Spiral Timeshift” at 2:40 (epicness infinite) and the entirety of the last track “Technocalyptic Cybergeddon’ specially the break at 4:26 and the solo that kicks in around 7:40 for further proof. Although their vocal tone hasn't changed drastically from the previous two albums, something about this album really shows that they've grown as vocalists. Just listen to the album for yourself and be wowed. Heavy metal’s fascination with space is a long and storied one, especially in recent years as the mass media has become engrossed in science, with a half-million shows that all seem to boil down to, “Check out how awesome this shit is!”, as voiced by Morgan Freeman or breathlessly delivered by popular physicists. Having said that, Per Nilsson is a truly underrated guitar maestro and this album solidifies that fact even further.
